Medical Laboratory Analysis Department Students Visit Balsam Hospital

Third-year students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis at Cihan University-Erbil visited Balsam Hospital on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer and Assistant Lecturer Daban Kanbi Rashid.

The students were received by Mr. Halo Rashid, who introduced them to the activities in the bacteriology culture section. During the visit, the students learned about the stages of bacterial culture testing, which include inoculating samples, monitoring bacterial growth to identify the bacteria, and interpreting the results.

Mr. Halo then explained how these tests are performed in accordance with international standards and emphasized the importance of following laboratory procedures and quality control measures to ensure accurate results.

Additionally, he talked about the functions of the VITEK system, such as identifying bacteria, testing their susceptibility to antibiotics, and how its results are used in the section’s laboratory work.

At the end of the visit, he provided them with several international scientific resources on bacterial culture testing, enabling them to review what they had learned during the tour and explore this area of medical laboratory practice in greater depth.
