On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, a group of students from the Department of English Language at Cihan University–Erbil conducted an educational workshop entitled “AI-Based Speaking Skills” at Hawler 3 Private School under the supervision of Lecturer Pola Tahseen Mohamad, Head of the Department of English.
Upon arrival, the university students were warmly received by the school principal, Mr. Abdullah Hamed. The second-stage students, Zahra Jumaa Kaksor and Imad Issa Shawlat, delivered presentations on the role of artificial intelligence in English language learning. They demonstrated how ChatGPT and Google Gemini can facilitate interactive conversations, generate real-life speaking scenarios, introduce practical expressions, and provide feedback to support language practice. They also highlighted how these tools can help learners construct sentences, expand their vocabulary, improve conversational fluency, and build confidence in communicating in English.
The third-stage students, Saba Ayad Abdulwahad, Tawar Anwar Aziz, and Kazhyan Anwar Ali, demonstrated specialized AI-powered applications designed to strengthen learners’ speaking abilities. They presented ELSA Speak as a tool for refining pronunciation, identifying pronunciation errors, and improving fluency; Duolingo Max as a tool for engaging learners in interactive conversations and practising real-life communication; and Speak AI as a tool for developing spontaneous speaking, improving verbal expression, and strengthening overall communication skills. Through practical demonstrations, they highlighted how these technologies can provide personalized speaking practice, encourage active participation, and help learners overcome hesitation when speaking English.
The workshop emphasized the potential of AI tools to complement traditional English language instruction by providing accessible, interactive, and engaging opportunities for language practice. It encouraged school students to explore these technologies responsibly and use them as supplementary learning resources to improve pronunciation, expand their vocabulary, develop fluency, and strengthen their ability to communicate effectively in English.
The activity concluded by highlighting the importance of educational collaboration between Cihan University–Erbil and Hawler 3 Private School.
