One of the privileges of students studying at Cihan University-Erbil is they are offered experiential learning opportunities outside the classroom, especially outside the university campus setting.
Focusing on the Department of Biomedical Sciences, its first-stage students recently participated in the scientific visit to PAKY Hospital, Erbil other than attending weekly lectures in the classroom and gaining practical knowledge in the laboratories at Cihan University-Erbil.
This visit which was organized on 3 March 2022 by the above-mentioned department aimed at increasing the students’ knowledge of the various aspects related to hospitals in general. These included but were not limited to having students obtain information about the way the aforementioned hospital is operating, its laboratories, and the latest as well as advanced technologies to test on an impressively wide variety of samples.
This visit which was held under the supervision of Assistant lecturers Ms. Noor Sami Omar and Mr. Sirwan Ahmed Rashid engaged the students’ interest, as the students were exposed to the Computerized Tomography (CT) scan, X-rays, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Other than the students having the opportunity to see these authentic materials, the students got more familiar with them through the explanations given pertaining to their functions, differences, advantages including step-by-step instructions with demonstrations on how to utilize them.
During the visit, the students played the role of a phlebotomist for the first time at the laboratory such as; they collected blood samples from each other and later sent them for analysis and testing. Although these hands-on activities seemed challenging to the students, they enjoyed this learning experience which enabled them to apply the knowledge that they have previously learnt at Cihan University-Erbil to a real-world setting.
The students look forward to participating in the same event in the future!
