On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Department of Radiological Imaging Technologies and Optometry organized a breast cancer awareness workshop to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The workshop was attended by Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ayad Hazim.
The event began with an opening speech delivered by the head of the Department of Radiological Imaging Technologies, Assistant Lecturer Omar Adil Muhammad Ali, who welcomed the attendees and spoke about the importance of marking this month to spread awareness of early detection of the disease.
The opening speech was followed by a workshop, titled ‘Breast Cancer – Diagnostic Radiology: Does It Help?’ delivered by Dr. Ahmed Diaa Abdul Wahab, a diagnostic radiology specialist and trainer at the Kurdistan Board of Medical Specialties.
During the workshop, he addressed the types of breast cancer and explained the benefits of early detection procedures and their role in improving treatment and recovery outcomes.
He also reviewed the diagnostic radiological examinations used to detect and monitor the disease, including mammography, which is the primary tool for routine screening and early detection; ultrasound, which is used to distinguish solid masses from cysts and to assess cases in younger women; and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is relied upon for cases requiring more precise assessment or among higher-risk groups, explaining when each is used and the limits of each examination’s role.
The event included a question-and-answer session, during which attendees asked about the symptoms that warrant seeing a doctor, the appropriate age to begin regular screening, and the safety and procedure of mammography. All questions were answered thoroughly by Dr. Ahmed.
At the end of the workshop, Assistant Lecturer Omar extended his thanks and appreciation to Dr. Ahmed Diaa for the valuable information provided and to the attendees and students who took part in the awareness activities for their active participation, commending their efforts in making the event a success and strengthening health awareness among the students of both departments.
