The Head of the Independent Board of Human Rights Visits Cihan University-Erbil
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, a delegation from the Independent Commission for Human Rights, led by Ms. Mona Yokhana Yaqo, the Head of the Independent Board of Human Rights, paid a visit to Cihan University-Erbil.
During a meeting that took place between Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Delawi, president of Cihan University-Erbil, Dr. Nawzad Yahya Bajger, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cihan Campuses, on one side, and Ms. Mona Yokhana Yaqo, the Head of the Independent Board of Human Rights, on the other side, the head of the commission outlined the purpose of their visit. She emphasized the significance of both the university and the Human Rights Commission as two pivotal institutions within society, directly connected to the people. She stated that university students have a crucial role to play in raising awareness among citizens. She said: “As an independent human rights commission, we aspire to collaborate; utilizing each other’s capabilities for organizing activities, conferences, researching social phenomena, and providing training to both lecturers and students. She proposed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Independent Human Rights Commission and Cihan University-Erbil.
In response, the President of Cihan University-Erbil warmly welcomed the visiting delegation and highlighted the role of the Independent Human Rights Commission in promoting awareness of human rights. He underlined that universities, in general, and Cihan University in particular, are not just centers of education but also important cultural institutions that can significantly contribute to raising awareness among individuals and society. They can train students to respect diverse viewpoints and opinions with the ultimate goal of instilling a belief in human rights and mutual acceptance. Prof. Dr. Amjad further expressed the readiness of Cihan University to sign a memorandum of understanding for collaborative endeavors.
In the same meeting, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cihan University Campuses expressed his delight at the visit of the Human Rights Commission delegation to Cihan University. He stated, “We, as Cihan institution, are delighted to establish connections with various organizations, including those advocating for human rights.” He elucidated that universities across Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok are fully prepared to host various types of events such as conferences, workshops, seminars, and training courses related to human rights in partnership with the Independent Human Rights Commission. Dr. Nawzad Yahya Bajger expressed his enthusiasm for continuing their collaborative efforts in serving the community, guided by the forthcoming memorandum of understanding.”
