Our dear students,
I am proud to inform you that, out of all public and private universities in Iraq, Cihan University-Erbil has been ranked first in the Kurdistan Region and second overall, after the University of Baghdad, in the British Times Higher Education Rankings for 2025.
This ranking was released on Thursday, November 21, 2024, and hundreds of academic institutions and universities from 92 countries around the world participated. Of the more than 150 public and private universities in Iraq, only 12 were ranked, including Cihan University-Erbil, which came in the first place in the Kurdistan Region and second overall, behind the University of Baghdad. It has a global ranking of 251.
I want to thank all of the University Council members, the scientific department staff, my beloved students, and the university’s administrative staff for their time and effort in achieving this significant scientific accomplishment, which has allowed you to record a great honour.
As you are aware, there are stringent requirements and regulations that govern this global ranking. Cihan University-Erbil voluntarily complies with all rules and regulations, particularly when it comes to accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have been approved by the UN. These goals are based on three main principles, which include eleven criteria: inputs and financial support. The second concept, “Process,” outlines four requirements for success and material facilitation, as well as administrative assistance for the particular promotion procedure.
The third principle (products) consists of five criteria for the publication of scientific research in various disciplines, including the rate of publication of scientific research in various disciplines, the value of research outside of disciplines, the calibre of multidisciplinary scientific research, and reputation as ranking criteria.
Because it reflects the university’s ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of good leadership and provide innovative research products in all fields within the framework of a scientific research environment, Cihan University-Erbil’s ranking as the best university in the Kurdistan Region, second in Iraq after the University of Baghdad, and 251st on the global basis is a living testament to the university’s seriousness about the importance of developing innovative and multidisciplinary scientific research methods.
Due to the tireless efforts and generosity of researchers and academic staff in the scientific departments, this achievement will not be our last effort, but it will serve as a significant motivator to present better work and spread the positive message of Cihan University-Erbil. It is crucial that we all work together to preserve and advance this academic and scientific accomplishment so that innovation and scientific achievements can continue.
