Extraction Tasks by the Nutrition and Dietetics Department Students
On 7 April 2022, third-year students from the Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Cihan University – Erbil continued having their ‘Herbs and Alternative Medicine’ practical course which focused on the extraction processes involving the malva species root, dandelion flower, and rose flower leaves.
The practical session started with collecting the dried plants from the drying ovens at the laboratory. This was followed by grinding those plants into a fine powder and measuring 2.5 grams of the malva plant, dandelion flower, and rose flower leaves powder. The prepared powder was later mixed with distilled water with a mortar and pestle to rupture the cells of the plant and get a higher quality extract out of the plant. Then that particular mixture was transferred to a glass container.
Another mixture of each powder was also done by the students. The mixture was added with 96% ethanol alcohol instead of distilled water. The extraction process is expected to end by next week after those two mixtures rested and have enough time to release their secondary metabolites.
