Media Department Student Highlights the Harmful Effects of iPad Use at Payman Mixed Primary School
On Monday, October 19, 2026, Hemn Azad Sdiq, a second-year student from the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismail Mawlood, presented a scientific and awareness seminar titled ‘The Harmful Effects of iPad Use’ to fifth-grade pupils at Payman Mixed Primary School in Erbil. The student was warmly received by Ms. Sar Nabi Ahmed, a teacher at the school.
Harmful Effects of iPad Use
At the beginning of the seminar, the student highlighted the negative effects of prolonged use of iPads and smart devices, particularly on children’s health and development. In this context, he discussed eye strain and vision problems, the effects of screen use on sleep, as well as neck and back pain caused by improper sitting positions and incorrect use of these devices.
He also highlighted the psychological and behavioural effects of excessive iPad use, including reduced concentration, excessive screen engagement, and decreased participation in social activities. In addition, he explained to the pupils the importance of maintaining family and social relationships and creating a balance between technology use and daily life activities.
Guidelines and Solutions
In the guidelines section, Hemen Azad presented several practical solutions to reduce the harmful effects of iPad use, including setting time limits, taking regular breaks, and encouraging children to participate in physical and mental activities such as sports, reading books, and educational games. He also emphasized the importance of guiding children toward the balanced and responsible use of smart devices.
Discussion and Conclusion of the Activity
At the end of the seminar, a discussion and question-and-answer session took place between the presenter and the fifth-grade pupils. The pupils actively participated by sharing their questions and opinions about the harmful effects of iPad use and ways to reduce these effects. Their questions were answered during the session.
Finally, Ms. Sar Nabi Ahmed, on behalf of Payman Mixed Primary School, expressed her thanks and appreciation to Hemn Azad Sdiq for presenting the seminar and contributing to raising pupils’ awareness of the harmful effects of iPad use.
