Media Department Students Present an Awareness Seminar at Zanyari Private School

Under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismael Mawlood, fourth-stage students from the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil presented an awareness seminar on “Media Literacy” to students at Zanyari Private School in Erbil on Monday, February 9, 2026.

The participating students, Rebaz Khoshawi and Urfa Haji, were warmly received by Mr. Karwan Mahmoud. In the first part of the seminar, Rebaz Khoshawi provided an introduction to new technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI). He noted that while these technologies facilitate many tasks, they have also contributed to the rapid spread of information, much of which may be inaccurate. He explained how the digital world can produce fake images and texts that appear very realistic, making it more challenging for students to discern the truth.

Subsequently, Urfa Haji discussed the concept of media literacy in detail, emphasizing the importance of preventing students from falling into the trap of “misleading news.” She highlighted that media literacy involves carefully evaluating any content encountered on social media. Furthermore, she pointed out the negative aspects of the digital world when used without awareness, stating that simply knowing how to use technology is not enough; one must dedicate time to learning “digital defense.”

At the end of the seminar, the administration of Zanyari Private School expressed their gratitude to the Media Department students for introducing the pupils to the principles of media literacy and for teaching them how to protect themselves from fake news and the negative aspects of the digital world.
