On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a group of second-year students from the Department of Translation at Cihan University–Erbil delivered a seminar to students of the Department of Business Administration at Cihan Institute.
The seminar, titled “Translation and Critical Thinking as Part of the Writing Process,” was held as part of their Academic Writing course under the supervision of their course lecturer, Assistant Lecturer Zeena Mahmood Ameen. Upon arrival, the students and their lecturer were received by Mr. Mohammed Hassan Agha, Head of the Department of Business Administration.
The seminar began with student Madlin Anwer Abdulaziz asking the students to choose one of the suggested topics. The students then worked in groups to write a paragraph based on their chosen topics. Tina explained the requirements they needed to meet and monitored each group’s progress throughout the activity.
After each group finished writing its paragraph, student Hind Muthana Hassan posed several questions about the steps they had taken before, during, and after writing. The discussion encouraged students to reflect on their preparation, idea generation, and decision-making processes and to recognize the importance of pre-writing activities in producing well-organized written texts. The students were also asked whether they had translated their ideas from their mother tongue into English during the writing process.
In the final part of the seminar, the third presenter, Abdullah Thamer Abdulrahman, introduced the students to the writing process, its importance, and its main stages, explaining each stage with relevant examples. Demonstrations of pre-writing techniques were also provided to help the students understand how to generate and organize ideas before drafting. Each group was then asked to explain its ideas, and feedback was provided to help the students improve their writing skills and develop a better understanding of the writing process.
The seminar concluded by emphasizing the importance of following the writing process in all types of writing, thinking critically, selecting appropriate language, and accurately translating ideas into English before putting them into writing. The students were commended for their active participation in the activities.
