Cihan University-Erbil Students of Medical Laboratory Analysis Department Visit Shar Hospital

A group of fourth-year students at Medical Laboratory Analysis visited the laboratory of Shar Hospital in Erbil on Sunday, January 15, 2024, under the supervision of assistant lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer. They were welcomed by the staff of Mr. Omar Rashid, the supervisor of Shar Hospital Laboratories.

Shar Hospital laboratory contains sections of great importance in the field of analysis, including the sections of fungi, bacteria, culture, chemistry, hormones, tissue matching, and viruses, in addition to a device specialized in measuring blood gases. Therefore, the staff explained important details about the devices in their laboratory.

The students had the opportunity to share their ideas and information about all laboratory sections. A.L Sally Khalil added information to the students and explained the importance of each part within these laboratory devices and how each device works and what is the difference between each company’s device in terms of features and characteristics. She also discussed the importance of knowing how to choose the appropriate device according to the laboratory requirements and added how to understand whether the analysis results given by any device are correct or not and how to deal with the problems facing each technician in the laboratory. The goal of this visit is to prepare fourth-year students to understand how all parts of the laboratory work from the first room, which is the phlebotomy room and receiving patients, through the other sections, which ends with the administration room and entering the analysis results data for patients. And to understand how to establish a new and independent laboratory system.

This visit reflected the insistence of the academic team of Cihan University-Erbil to link practical work in the field with what is taught within the university. The visit ended with discussing many questions about how to develop their skills in the future.
