On Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Cihan University–Erbil organized an educational field visit to the headquarters of Al-Iraqiya Satellite Channel in Erbil for third- and fourth-year students under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Saman Hassan Ali.
Upon arrival, the students and their supervising lecturer were warmly received by Mr. Othman Bashqali, Head of the Department/Office, who welcomed the delegation and praised the importance of such initiatives in developing students’ knowledge and skills in international relations and diplomacy.
During the visit, Mr. Othman Bashqali delivered a lecture on the institutional and legal status of the Iraqi Media Network, including its position within the Iraqi state structure, financial independence, and regulatory oversight. He also discussed editorial independence, the influence of external political factors on media operations, the work of field correspondents, and the channel’s role in conveying citizens’ concerns to the relevant authorities.
The lecture was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students raised questions about the role of the media in shaping public opinion, influencing political decision-making, and supporting public relations.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of the channel’s offices and studios. The students observed the technical, administrative, and editorial processes involved in producing news broadcasts and preparing field reports, gaining practical insights into the daily operations of a satellite television channel.
The visit reflected the department’s commitment to enriching students’ academic knowledge and deepening their understanding of the relationship between media and diplomacy in today’s political landscape.
