Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis at Cihan University-Erbil Visits Paki Hospital
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, a group of fourth-stage students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis visited Paki Hospital under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer to learn about the most important cardiac tests and their relevance to medical laboratories. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by Dr. Karzan Barham Mawloud, a specialist in cardiology, catheterization, internal medicine, the digestive system, and diabetes.
During the visit, Dr. Karzan provided a detailed explanation of key heart-related enzymes, their significance, and how to interpret laboratory results. He discussed Troponin, which has three types: Troponin C, Troponin T, and Troponin I. These enzymes increase when there is damage to the heart muscle. Dr. Karzan explained that Troponin levels rise two hours after a heart attack and remain elevated for up to 10 days. He also emphasized how to detect a second heart attack within this period using CK-MB, an enzyme that has a shorter elevation duration following heart muscle damage.
Dr. Karzan noted that elevated Troponin levels can also result from other conditions, such as kidney failure. Therefore, it is essential to determine the underlying cause of the increase to ensure timely and accurate treatment. This involves questioning the patient, analyzing symptoms, and conducting additional tests alongside enzyme analysis.
At the end of the visit, a question-and-answer session was held, during which the students discussed various topics with the doctor. They recorded these important notes to write a report and to benefit from the valuable information in the future.
