English Language Department Students Conduct a Phonics and Alphabet Competition at Hawler Private Kindergarten

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, second-stage students from the Department of English at Cihan University–Erbil conducted an educational English language activity at Hawler Private Kindergarten under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen. Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by Ms. Alaa Kamal, the principal of Hawler Private Kindergarten.

First, Shahad Ahmed Mahdi played a phonics song to help the children learn the sounds of English letters and improve their pronunciation. She explained the sounds and encouraged the children to listen and repeat, making learning fun and interactive.

Next, Dalya Abdulstar introduced uppercase and lowercase letters, helping the children recognize, pronounce, and remember them through practice and simple activities. She also assessed their understanding by asking them to identify the letters. Ruwaida Ahmed Abdullah encouraged the children to pronounce the letters aloud to strengthen their recognition and pronunciation skills.

Following the introductory activities, the children were divided into three groups, each guided by a university student representative. Shahad Ahmed Mahdi led Group 1, Ruwaida Ahmed Abdullah led Group 2, and Dunya Abdulstar Shekh led Group 3. Each group received jumbled alphabet letters and was asked to arrange them in the correct order by matching uppercase letters with their lowercase forms.

With guidance from the university students, the children worked together to complete the task. Group 2, led by Ruwaida Ahmed Abdullah, won first place, followed by Group 1, led by Shahad Ahmed Mahdi, in second place, and Group 3, led by Dunya Abdulstar Shekh, in third place.

The event concluded with a group photo commemorating the successful collaboration between Cihan University–Erbil and Hawler Private Kindergarten.
