Scientific Visit to Erbil International Hospital Laboratory by Medical Laboratory Analysis Department Students
Fourth-year students of the Medical Laboratory Analysis Department at Cihan University–Erbil visited the Erbil International Hospital Laboratory on Monday, 26 January 2026, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Daban Kanaby Rashed.
The students were welcomed by Mr. Omar Ali Hussein, who provided an introductory tour of the Erbil International Hospital Laboratory. The tour included an overview of the sample reception process and how specimens are documented in laboratory records and systems, labeled, and tracked through different laboratory units to minimize mix-ups and errors.
The visit then focused on the Histopathology Unit, where the workflow was explained clearly, starting with the receipt and fixation of tissue specimens, followed by processing and paraffin embedding, and then sectioning and staining. The purpose of each step and its impact on slide quality and the accuracy of microscopic interpretation were also clarified. In addition, key laboratory safety measures and basic quality control principles were highlighted, particularly in relation to handling reagents and slides.
In another part of the visit, the students were introduced to the Alegria system for immunological diseases. A concise explanation was provided regarding its operating concept, the types of immunology-related tests it supports in routine laboratory work, and the essential requirements for sample handling prior to result verification and reporting.
