On Monday, November 2, 2026, fourth-stage students from the Department of English at Cihan University–Erbil participated in a training session entitled ‘A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Your Graduation Project,’ delivered by Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan, a postgraduate researcher at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH), under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen.
At the beginning of the session, Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan introduced the fundamental stages of academic research and emphasized the importance of selecting a clear and relevant research topic, identifying a research problem, and establishing appropriate research objectives and questions. He provided students with a step-by-step explanation of how to develop and organize the five main chapters of a graduation project: the introduction, literature review, research methodology, data analysis and results, and discussion and conclusions.
Furthermore, Dr. Sidad highlighted the importance of identifying research gaps through a critical review of previous studies and explaining how a research project can address these gaps in the existing literature. He also discussed the differences between qualitative and quantitative research approaches, explaining how to select appropriate research designs, data collection instruments, and analysis methods based on the research questions and objectives. Particular attention was given to validity and reliability and their roles in ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and credibility of research instruments and findings. In addition, he explained the importance of conducting a pilot study before the main research to identify potential problems, evaluate research instruments, and make necessary adjustments before proceeding with actual data collection.
The practical segment of the training featured a Research Project Roadmap activity, which focused on planning, organization, and systematic thinking in academic research. During this activity, students were given research titles and asked to formulate two relevant research questions for each title. This task encouraged them to think critically about the relationship between research topics, research problems, and research questions. Following the activity, several students presented their proposed research questions and explained the reasoning behind their choices, receiving feedback and practical guidance from the trainer. Throughout the session, Dr. Sidad maintained active interaction with the students through an engaging question-and-answer discussion, encouraging them to raise questions, share their research ideas, and seek clarification on potential challenges they might encounter when writing their graduation projects.
At the end of the session, Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen expressed her gratitude to Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan for delivering the informative training session and sharing his academic knowledge and research expertise with the students.
